If you've not been good enough to win a game in 60 minutes regulation, you lose the toss in OT and your defence isn't good enough to stop the opposition getting into field goal range why should you deserve another chance at keeping the game going?

So just because the Pats/Colts/Saints win the toss in overtime it's fair they win as soon as they get into FG range? with them offences, that could be just a couple of plays, other then maybe a full strength Jets D, nobody would realistically stop those 3 teams under the old/regular season rules.

The good bit about the rule though is if the team that receives the kick off gets picked off at any time in the drive, a FG wins it.

If you're going down that line, why would it be fair for the Bears to win the toss and have Devin Hester take the OT kickoff to the house and end the game? Surely the other side's offence should get at least one possession otherwise apparently it's "not fair".

They should have just brought in the college rules. Seems a bit inconsistent, even gimmicky, having the rule for FG's only and not TD's.

I didn't realise those 3 teams scored on every single drive? If you win the toss and get the ball into FG range then kick it is fair you win. If your in a playoff game and lose the toss you will win if you are good enough. As the old saying goes "Defence wins Championships" if you ain't good enough to stop a team in overtime then you ain't good enough to win. Very poor rule change in my opinion.

I can see both ends of the argument but I think it promotes positive play. Rushing/passing is far more exciting to see then watching someone take a FG.

It promotes hazardous play with a lack of ball security from the offence and safe play from the defence. What it is basically saying is to end a game you need a TD. That means the Offence have got to get it another 35 yards which, if they haven't been able to win in regulation, you can assume would be difficult and result in ridiculous plays, which isn't entertaining. Whereas the defence can just go into nickel/prevent defence and camp on the goal line, keeping them to just a FG knowing that they can still win the game.

It's a ridiculous idea, in any incarnation. The team to score any point first in OT should win, even more so in the play-offs. Take us versus Arizona. We came back from 21 down to tie and get it to OT. Instead of the TD they scored we take it down field and kick a FG. It would be ridiculous for us then to have to give Arizona the ball for them to score when we would have deservedly won. It's just a ridiculous idea.

I must have missed when, with the Championship on the line, Peyton and the magical Colts, marched down field and scored at will?

It's ridiculous to imply what your saying.

I forgot he chokes in the playoffs  8)

The college system for overtime is the best imo.

Similar system used in BUAFL. [I know this unfortunately]

Team gets the ball on the opposition's 20 yard line, you get 4 downs to get the 10 or score. If you get a FG and the other team gets a TD, they win. Both get same number of points, you go again until someone loses.

Lost to Leeds in double overtime cause of this. x_x
