==============================================
Keighley Cougars winger Sam Gardner will retire from professional Rugby League at the end of the 2009 season.
He will continue his playing career with Otley Rugby Union Club.
The 32-year-old winger has not been able to command a regular first-team place with the Cougars during this season.
Barry Eaton, the Cougars’ Head Coach, said: “Sam has been a valuable member of the Cougars squad and we shall miss him.
“I’d like to thank him for all he has done for all the Cougars and wish him well in the remainder of his career”.
Sam, a Baildon-based teacher, said: “It’s been a fantastic five years with the Cougars.
“When I first arrived at Cougar Park for a trial I’d been playing professional rugby union and didn’t have much to show them other than the self belief that I could do the business.
“But the Cougars gave me that chance and had faith in me. I’ve really enjoyed my time with Keighley.”
Gardner joined the Cougars on 19 March 2005. He has made seven appearances for the Cougars so far this year and has scored two tries.
Before playing for the Cougars he had played for Bradford Bulls and Bradford –based amateur clubs, West Bowling and Dudley Bill.
He has also played as a professional in rugby union with Otley and Luton and represented Yorkshire at union.
