SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done But he with a chuckle replied That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
I know this a hypothetical question now you are back in the Championship..
but had you stayed in Division One...
Surely your overspend against the salary cap for the season to come should have been your problem to deal with. and not something that would have put you at an advantage over the rest of the division.. why should have the rest of the National League One operate within the salary cap and not you ?... looking at your league position /results through the 09 season your not telling me that someone within your club hadn't actually thought 'oh oh t the figures wont add up if we get relegated '
Ambition ,yep wonderful but wht should those clubs that are financialy prudence n work within the rules be penalised..
In truth yes , But that is one of the sports problems , clubs approach and agree , even sign players on contracts before the end of the season , it doesn't seem to happen in other sports , just RL
If Leigh didn't approach , agree and sign players till the end of the season and other clubs did , then if we had escaped relegation we would have been possibly setting ourselves up for relegation the following year
It is also in my opinion not good to have players playing against their new employers at the end of the season

The players in question I assume are Paul,Bibey n Hartley who were all commited to the Centurions in August 09 ,ie the back end of the season...when there was a chance (albeit slight) of Leigh being relegated .....
So why did Leigh strike a deal with them at that point assuming catagorically that they would be playing in the Championship?, Which has obviously been done otherwise you wouldn't have applied to be let off the salary cap ? Why was no alternative deal brokered with those players that would fit within the cap if you were relegated ?
If that deal couldnt be agreeded then those players should not have been signed ...simples

Agreed, most football clubs have contracts that are tiered according to the division the club is in at the time. So why couldn't Leigh?
I'm afraid what Leigh did, signing star players assuming the club was too good to go down just smacks of arrogance.

Quite simply because those players would not have signed for the money offered
The thing is Starbug, had you not stayed up by virtue of Gateshead going bust, that arrogance would have come back to bite you on the booty big time.
You'd have been miles over the Ch1 salary cap and I don't think "we never thought we'd be relegated so we signed them anyway" would have been considered mitigating circumstances and you'd have been looking at a huge points deduction and fine.
Take us for example, we waited until it was certain we were promoted until we started bringing players in.
It was really poor from the management at Leigh to do what they did.

How many times do you want me to agree with you ?
The RFL had already agreed to our ' mitigating circumstances ' before the Gateshead problem surfaced , wrong but that is what had happened
As I said there are no rules to prevent any club doing what we did , and as we know in RL , if there are no rules to prevent something , it's odds on a club will do it
