500 mile sponsored walk for honour our troops.

Keighley Cougars are proud to announce that they will be supporting the non - profitable organisation ‘Honour Our Troops’ (aka HOT) as they embark on a 500 mile sponsored charity walk. They were approached by Sue Gow from Oakworth, the Keighley and District Organiser for this event. The walk will set off on 4th January 2010 from Catterick Garrison HQ and arrive into Aldershot Garrison on 29th January 2010; calling through many garrison towns along it’s 507 mile route. It will arrive in Keighley on the 6th January 2010 and leave for Leeds on the 7th January 2010.

The aim of the walk is to raise money for the group Honour Our Troops which was set up by a serving soldier last year on the social network site Facebook. The group is made up of people from all over the UK who all have a common aim, to boost the morale of our troops wherever they may be. Many events are taking place all over the country to raise money for a huge (free) concert for troops serving abroad but mainly in Afghanistan. Money from the concert will be divided between the Army, Navy and RAF Benevolent Funds.

The 500 Mile Sponsored Walk for Honour Our Troops group has gained support from many Mayors along the route; including Keighley’s own Cllr. Margaret Ward. Other sponsors and supporters of this event include; Wolves and Farnborough FC’s, Dr Phyllis Starkey MP for Milton Keynes and Keighley businesses; Sign and Design and RaisePrint. The pop group The Proclaimers who sang “I Would Walk 500 Miles” also jumped at the opportunity to sponsor this worthwhile event.

Other HOT events include a calendar for release before Christmas endorsed by Simon Weston OBE and Matt Croucher (George Cross recipient) , and donation of personal royalties from the song ‘Coming Home’ due for release 2nd November by the band ‘Morpheus Rising’ who are serving soldiers. Visit their website:
www.honour-our-troops.com<http> for more information regarding these and other fund raising events.

Sue is also holding a promotional campaign for the sponsored walk on Saturday the 14th November in the Airedale Centre in Keighley; where anyone who is interested can sign up for the walk or find out general information. There is no minimum of how far you can walk it can be as little as a few steps or as much as the full 507 miles. The more walkers taking part the more money raised for the troops. The organisers of the sponsored walk are also looking for marshals; in particular anyone who is trained in first aid. Keighley Cougars club mascot Freddie Cougar will be joining them in the Airedale Centre as will the Mayor of Keighley, Margaret Ward who will also be participating in the walk herself along with some Cougar players.

Helen Carter, Keighley Cougars General Manager “We are delighted to help such a worthwhile charity and hope that the town gets behind it. One of our past players, James Hutchinson is now in the RAF so we know how friends and families can be affected. I would urge as many people as possible to take part in the walk, I myself will be doing some of!”
To sign up and register for the event or to look at the full route please go to the following website: http://500miles4charity.ning.com/ and information packs and sponsorship forms can be obtained by contacting suegow@ymail.com<mailto>
