Paul Royston is back. : Wed Nov 25, 2009 5:34 pm
Paul Royston, one of the top conditioning experts in West Yorkshire, has
returned to the coaching staff at promoted Keighley Cougars.
The Cougars were promoted to the Co-operative Championship after beating
Oldham in last October's Championship One Grand Final and Royston has
been recruited to work alongside Head Coach Barry Eaton.
Royston, who owns 'Workouts' gymnasium on Oakworth Road, Keighley and in
Shipley, was on the Cougars staff when they were last promoted in 2003
and has advised many of Eaton's predecessors at Cougar Park.
Paul said: "Barry felt that because the fitness standards are higher in
the Championship that he wanted to take a new approach to fitness and
conditioning at the club so he approached me.
"The athletic requirement in the Championship will demand far more of
the Cougars squad than it did in Championship One so we will be working
hard with the Keighley players to ensure that they have the best
possible preparation,"
Royston has worked with other professional Rugby League clubs and
players in the area from Bradford Bulls and Halifax as well as with
other sportsmen and women, so he is aware of what standards the Cougar
players will need to achieve to give them a chance of keeping the
Championship place they fought so hard to earn in 2009.
Paul is a qualified teacher and is currently studying for a Masters
Degree in Strength and Conditioning at Bolton University.
Added Royston: "I'm looking forward to working with Barry and the Cougar
players. It promises to be a great adventure."
Eaton said: "Paul has great experience working with Rugby League players
and that's going to be vital for us as we seek to cement a place in the
Co-operative Championship.
"The physical condition and preparation of the players will be on prime
importance as we pit ourselves against such teams as Barrow Raiders,
Featherstone Rovers, Halifax, Leigh Centurions and Widnes Vikings.
"Very few people in the country never mind Yorkshire are as well
qualified as Paul and it's a major boost for the club that he accepted
our invitation to join our backroom team."
