At the end of the day, it's down to simple economics - demand and supply and market forces will find the correct valuation of a particular players value based on his abilty and price for providing it.
There's only a finite pot (until HMRC aren't paid their rightful dues) and players will come and go. How many transfers are now for a fee?

Always makes me laugh when people say that top end sports stars, especially football players, are overpaid.
They're only paid what someone is prepared to pay them.
If we don't think they're worth it or can't afford it, then we have to haggle them down to something acceptable or say goodbye. It's just plain common sense and good financial management.
