I see the points both ways and I actually think it's a good idea to issue shares. It encourages fan involvement and raises funds.

My only bug would be a scenario like this. Say Rugby grew and grew in popularity and started getting large tv coverage and big business/businessmen got involved (like football). The club was sold on to a businessman who wanted to take them further etc and he paid a large premium for the company. As a shareholder who put money in when times were hard would you not expect some of the money coming in that other shareholders were receiving?

At £100 a pop minimum with a target of £100k I would want that to be something that at least held it's value.

Did I hear somewhere that mr kear is now a shareholder when he moved upstairs?

Think it's a great idea to get kids shares. If you can't afford more ask club to transfer ownership from you to them split.

Why indeed?

Why do people spend money buying squares of turf if a club moves to another ground when they've got a garden full of the stuff anyway? Or other mementos that have neither practical value nor the material value for which they've paid well over the odds?

It's symbolism, nothing more, and nothing less. An important element in life, with little or no material value, but something which serves as a token and reminder of loyalty and commitment.

In purely material terms there's little difference in this particular case between share ownership and donation, as you've stated. But there is a significant difference at other levels.

Vanity? I could think of other ways of making a more lasting impression on people who are swayed by appearance than by waving a piece of paper designating 100 quids' worth of Wakefield Trinity RLFC shares in their faces, though vanity in the other sense of the word may in this case be closer to the mark.

It all helps, 37 pints is around the £100 mark, not suggesting you drink them all at once though
