Given that the guy is not match fit, has had very few training sessions with his new team, has just flown once round the world and was probably suffering from jet lag, it's a little unfair to expect him to turn in a match-winning performance. No one even expected him to play, so the surprise factor, plus the fact he is a player we were interested in signing, makes comment about him justified.
From the clips I've seen of him, he's clearly an outstanding player. That said, in many respects I'm glad we didn't get him, as I could see us having difficulties fitting him in, in the same way that we seem to have had difficulties making the Drew/Brough partnership work.
I'm absolutely delighted that our young guns and home-based talents are going so well this season. There are a number of threads commenting about individual players, though, and a number of threads heaping praise on the team as a whole for another outstanding "against the odds" performance.
The impact that Bird will have on SL will probably depend more on the Ausralian courts than the player himself, though.
