I remember it well, although I've previously posted (incorrectly) that I thought it was Brian Noble , but yes it was an absolute howler of a decision. We were attacking down near the North end (no North Stand in those days !!) and Summers (not Noble !!) somehow got the ball and ran about 90 metres but got tackled by our fullback just short of the line but there were no officials anywhere near at the time and IIRC Summers celebrated as though he had scored, so Whitfield awarded the try....absolute travesty !!!
Kirmudgeonly posted on the other "Child" thread that we have won 3 out of 30+ when he has been the ref...??
Then we need to be better in those games. There is no way he is trying to make us lose. We just don't handle his style very well. Personal abuse is just wrong. I get a lot of grief from people on here defending their right to free speach but for me, abuse isn't part of that.

No one is abusing Child, more criticising his refereeing style which we always seem to be on the wrong end of, no matter the personnel changes
EDIT - no one is abusing Child ON HERE as far as I can see. Facebook and Twitter is another matter.

Sorry Pop Tart. I think the part *We just don’t handle his style very well” is so wrong. The only style any referee should have is fairness and consistent. I’m sorry to say I have never seen that in any game Mr Child has officiated in a Trinity match.
I think you should read the tweet from Gareth Walker from a Super League Referee’s wife, and then close down this discussion quickly. Referees are human beings. We may not like every decision they make, but they deserve respect. This place (not as much) and that Northstanders page are becoming so vitriolic and poisonous. Not just referees, but others associated with the Club, who are also life long fans, just doing their job to the best of their ability. And yet they get publicly lambasted, with their families directly or indirectly told about it, and the whole world to see. At times, it’s soul destroying for me, and I don’t get 1% of what referees, head coaches, or players get. It’s time to start thinking about we actually do and say.
I understand what you are saying DC, but we are surely allowed to question decisions of a referee. No matter which one. In my own role I get questioned re some of my decisions, particularly when they're wrong! So I believe you have to accept its part of life in whatever job/role you do. In life we get analysed for our role, so it should be expected that this is regarded in the same light. However, I totally 100% agree with you regarding abuse of any individual. I would not accept it and neither should any one to do with any club - either officials, coaches volunteers etc. or referees.

I reckon you get questioned rather than screamed at, by a crowd of people, aggressively, and then followed up with social media comments accusing you of cheating so that your friends and family can see it. I don't see why people think they have the right to do that to be honest. There is a process for reviewing referee performance by people far more qualified than we are. Those are the people that question him.

Agree with your post 100%. I would never abuse anybody at a match or on social media but I do have a right to question decisions on a fans forum such as this that can impact on the end result of a game. To shut down discussions on the performance of a match official or a player (both positive and negative) during a match is just plain wrong, this should not be seen as abuse.

I was talking about being questioned in my role and yes I can assure you I have also been screamed at. So, in essence it is the same. Agree re the cheating/abuse side of things. As for a ref being screamed at, I'm pretty sure that is not exclusive to Wakefield fans.

Screamed at, I’ve been threatened to be knocked out during my mining career, they are still looking for them by the way
I suspect they don't mind the stuff from the terraces, on the assumption that it is pantomime-stuff that ends at full time. What goes on the pitch stays on the pitch and all that. Social media is the problem as we all treat it like we are just sounding off between friends, like blokes in a pub, but no one would like our pub rants broadcast to the world, and to the earshot of those who are being ranted about.
