Stats from the Leeds game : Mon Jun 10, 2019 8:04 pm
I know stats don't tell the full story but they do tell part of it.

Our forwards did a lot of work. Not all effective but the effort was there and the stats show it.

Wood didn't start the game but managed to make 37 tackles and top our tackle count.
That is traded off with 6 misses unfortunately though only 2 error and no penalties

Kelepi was the outstanding player for us as far as the man of steel points go
He did 28 tackles and made 151 metres which was the most for Trinity with an average gain of 8 metres and 3 tackle busts.
He made 2 off loads but also made 3 errors and missed 7 tackles

Batch went off pretty early so only made 18 tackles but he didn't have one miss.
He did give a penalty away.

Crowther made a massive 35 tackles, which like Wood was made off the bench so even more impressive.
He didn't make great yards with an average of 4 across 7 runs and he gave 2 penalties away and made 1 error.

Looking at those stats I make a conclusion that the guys that stay on longer and make more tackles also make errors. Fatigue in the team needs to be managed better though, when 2 go off not to return that is clearly a diffficult task.

With that in mind though, the stand out for me was King as he made 31 tackles with no misses.
He made 50 metres for an average gain of 6 metres but made no errors and gave no penalties away.
I don't want to see one out no error rugby. I like the way we throw the ball around. But having someone like King in the team allows the likes of Kelepi to take a chance and run the ball.

Unfortunately for us, Leeds stats were also pretty good with Watkins making 51 tackles with only 1 miss. No errors. No penalties. 8 metre average gain and Harry Newman making 16 tackle busts!

The problem the stats taken in full make bad reading for our performance particularly the total number of missed tackles and despite our greater possession the difference in metres made which is quite shocking.

Yet our coach was happy with our effort but not the execution ? I have looked at some of the stats on face book & some look dubious !

Just a thought, if we deliver that performance again at Salford - that's another loss, Salford are better than Leeds !

I'd say that's how I saw it too.
There was lots of effort but the final pass wasn't good enough.
That's why we have a lot of players with errors on the list.

Re: Stats from the Leeds game : Mon Jun 10, 2019 9:22 pm
These stats give the fans a basic understanding. All club's Stats go more in depth and mark many other areas. For example how many tackle wins and losses, kick pressure, push. They distinguish between carries and play carries which don't make as many metres as a carry. These dont. The list is huge including metres ran. People do a lot of work in D without making a tackle that helps the team and also a lot of work in O without touching the ball (For example if a ball carrier has genuine push as a + or - or whatever the individual clubs call it it makes it harder for the defence to know what happens next. If a ball carrier goes without push its often harder to make yards. Genuine push won't get much praise from fans but is important.
When fans watch a game they may remember 2 good bursts skitling players everywhere or other eye catching moments. They don't see all the 1 percenters that players do to help their team. There's lots of work going on behind the scenes by clubs and coaches and every player gets their own score.
Different positions full back, edges, middles etc do things in a game some fans don't see. It's hard to see all these attributes when you're watching for the entertainment and that's why there's coaching teams and video reviews.

The same will apply to the stats for Leeds therefore if they are in general better then whatever the individual the Leeds equivalent must be better over the squad of 17 players. The bottom line is we were just not good or clever enough on the day.

That’s the problem, they are fine as far as it goes.

I don’t think anyone has accused the team of lacking heart. However loads of teams at all levels produce effort. At SL level effort is not always enough that’s why it’s SL.

It’s easy to criticise from the terraces I know but I think most us could see the basic skills as opposed to effort we’re not there on Friday. What frustrates is that even in its depleted state we know this team can do better in that respect.

Let’s be honest as supporters and dare I say as a club we were claiming at the start of the season that we had strength in depth. Now I’m not suggesting we thought we had enough to cope with this seasons injury problems. However we are not as critical as we were a month back but perversely a month back we were winning games.

No point complaining or blaming but we do need to start playing better RL. Nobody can demand wins but I do think we are far better than Friday suggests.

I suspect the season is over in terms of top five and certainly the CCup. I can live with this because the reasons are obvious. To end up in an end of season scrap I find harder to accept. We don’t need or deserve to go there but to avoid that we need to get back to playing as decent form of Rugby as we ca and I think we are better than this.

It’s just my opinion FWIW which I accept isn’t much. We have the core of a team that could become a truly good team but the sooner we recover some form the better. It starts at Salford for me and why not it’s as good a place as any.

So ends the sermon

The only issue with that of course, is that Salford are bloody good on their day - and they certainly do know how to chuck the ball around and actually finish; they're miles better than Leeds, and we couldn't score a single point against them. Worrying.

The problem is I've seen loads of comments about effort and heart. That was my point of posting some stats.
