RL & clubs protocol when signing players. : Wed Jul 03, 2019 6:55 am
Hi all, so many years have passed regarding this subject, clubs used to ask for copies of a players medical record when wanting to sign a player, problems sometimes arose when the record was not up to date or not detailed enough or ommisions - a player signed & something allegedly was missing ? I must stress clubs have great respect now & are up front on this issue demonstrating good faith !
I think some times there has been a medical but my question of interest is as the title of the posting, what is the protocol now ? Do clubs observe this protocol to protect their investment value, would the insurance cover if something was amiss as no players have gone back to a club under " contract null & void " ?
Do ALL players now have a full medical as in FA football, is signing subject to a medical as in football ?

Fair question but I doubt any chairman/coach would take a player without some kind of medical.
It would be like buying a house on the word of the seller without surveys.

I would hope they are subject to a medical, back in the seventies I remember the transfer of Asa Hartford to Leeds Utd failing for a hole in the heart which lead to it not happening, he still continue playing to retirement to 91 even though in 71 it was found

Interesting thread, if you think about the mid-season signings that come from Oz its never "subject to medical" they just come over when the Visa is sorted.

I doubt we (or any team) have a dedicated person over there who conducts these tests for us.

I could be completely wrong!

Would think medical is done in down under around the time someone flies out to sort the contracts

Remember many moons ago when Ellis signed for Leeds but didn’t play for months through an injury many thought he had before he signed . Players get injuries all the time look at hall snapping his ACL before going over to AUS a big gamble for any club as who’s to say he would return to his former self, could they have cancelled his contract who knows but I bet they had a few sleepless nights as I don’t suppose he will have come cheap . Clubs must be geared up for these types of scenarios as they could easily be out of pocket and end up with a player that never fulfils his potential

I can't believe no one in the professional world of RL has ever thought of this before - well done to the OP - I'm certain that there'll be some urgent conversations in RL boardrooms across the country, to thrash out ways to ensure that they haven't just spunked half a million quid on a player who has two broken legs and a heavy cold.

^^ Grow up. It's a fair point raised, everyone knows in football that a full medical is undertaken prior to a transfer. Doubt many know the actual procedure in RL

I can advise that the protocol in RL for assessing a potential transfer targets medical status, is the tried and tested method of "Asking Lee Radford."
