Could Super League Be Back In Five Weeks

August could see a return to Super League when the twelve topflight clubs meet today to agree a schedule for restarting the top tier of the game, in order to achieve a meaningful season.

The return to action in the Championship and Championship One is, however, still unclear after failure to meet a consensus amongst the clubs and the RFL during an online meeting earlier in the week.

With sport restarting across the globe after the COVID-19 pandemic, Super League will have one eye on the end of the Football Premier League fixtures on the 26th July (the FA Cup Final being played on the 1st August) with a view to filling the SKY TV schedules on the first weekend of August.

Seems like some ideas now being put forward. What about those teams that have games to catch up with, due to pre Covid postponements. My understanding was, the backlog games would be played first, to enable all teams to restart the season, having played the same number of games.

TotalRL understands plans have been tabled which would see Headingley host three games on Sunday, August 2nd.

It would see Leeds take on Huddersfield, Hull KR play Toronto and the current Super League champions St Helens take on Catalans.

The proposal has yet to be ratified and is thought to be one of three options on the table to mark the league’s grand return.

Clubs will meet on Friday to finalise plans with the competition’s end date yet to be decided, though it’s expected that November 28th will be the date that closes the season in the shape of the Grand Final.

The prospect of three games on the same day to celebrate the resumption of the season will come as an appetising prospect to many, though games will be behind closed doors.

Super League has produced a number of different models for clubs to consider once the season does return, but a return on the first weekend of August is nailed on.

Happy not to catch up 2 home games behind closed doors. Much better to defer until we can get a crowd in and try to recoup something from this season. It seems the group mingling trials on the south coast beached and in town centres have not brought spikes in infection so these should help accelerate our return to "normality".
