A sad day when another RL great leaves us. A great player and ball handler.

Great player. I'm old enough to have seen him play.
Great player and coach.
Hard man in the days of hard men who had a lot of skill.
Made it in NRL and over here.

Brian Lockwood was a winner, however, when he became coach at wakey, he got the team committed & playing right, Sammy Sanderson was the half back & Brian player coach at loose forward when his body let him play. But the committe was an interfering type & bought Mike Lambkowski without Brian being told, he was not happy & warned the committe if they continued this behaviour.
The committee wanted " Lampy " to play scrum half & not Sammy, the club sold Sammy to Leeds, thus Brian had enough & left the club. Next up was his No 2 & former playing friend Bill Kirkbride, the rest we know about @ Wembley 79, etc.

I was 17 when Lockwood came to Trinity... I didn't recall that his tenure was initially as a winter signing from Balmain Tigers... I do remember the furore when Lampy was signed and Lockwood quit (for the first time)... claiming never to have heard of "lumpchompski" ... I never really understood the politics (although 'lumpchompski" became my favourite all time player)...

I always looked on with jealousy when Brian was playing for Hull KR and then Widnes in cup finals my teenaged brain not capable of understanding why he was no longer a Trinity player. A true great of the game from a magical era!

...the game has come a long way since then and he was (perhaps) a little ahead of his time for UK coaching.

ps you missed that there was twelve months of Ian Brooke as coach between Lockwood and Kirkbride.

The committee made the right call but went about it the wrong way.
What a player Mike turned out to be ! Made for rl!
Lockwood was a good old fashioned ball playing prop forward- he had skills that aresimply not evident in todays forwards - different game then of course.

Brian should have been remembered before the kick off today. Ex player and coach. R I P.
