Re: Hull FC Hall of fame : Sun Jan 29, 2023 12:05 am
Just cleaning up some statistics posted by Wilf.Francis was in charge of Hull in 2 spells totaling 15 years. After joining Hull from Warrington in 1949 he took over as coach from Joe Oliver in 1950 until 1963 when Johnny Whiteley succeeded him. He retired from playing in 1955.
After leaving Hull Francis had spells with Leeds ( after 2 unsuccessful Wembley finals with Hull he won with his 3rd attempt there) and a spell coaching North Sydney for a couple of seasons in the ARL.( first British coach in Aus).
He subsequently returned to Hull as Team Manager from 1971-1973.
I first saw Francis play at centre for Warrington against Hull at the Boulevard in 1948 when he and Brian Bevan were instrumental in a substantial Warrington win.
For those interested there is a book out covering the Biography of Roy called "Ahead Of His Time" written by Geoff Lee. Highly recommended!
