Jarrod Sammut couldn't hold down a regular half-back spot at the Crusaders or Bradford. He was behind Ben Jeffries at Bradford FFS. Quite why anyone would see him as an adequate back-up option to Rangi Chase beats me. He's not in the same league.
People say Chase is 'off the cuff' and he is to a point. But he also knows what he is doing - he's pulling defenders out of position, putting doubt in their minds and creating gaps for his teammates. He plays a team game. Sammut might also be 'off the cuff', but one great individual try every 10 weeks doesn't make him a team player. He'd certainly be no substitute for Chase.
I'm still hopeful we'll pull the Chase deal off. With him, we'll challenge for silverware and he'll put bums on seats - helping drive AP's 14,500 average attendance vision. But if we don't get him I'd rather stick with Seymour than go for Sammut.
