I do wish the club would just announce new deals when they've been done and keep quiet about the negotiations.

When they start reporting how much they would like to agree a new deal with a player it usually ends badly, e.g. Manu, Briscoe.

In recent years we've announced contract discussions when the player is on the way out, presumably so the club can say it tried to keep the player. Why announce discussions, why not just announce the player has signed when the discussions are complete?

The club haven't really announced anything - RH ask Radford "are you in discussions with winger Callum Lancaster about a new contract?" and report an exclusive.
