R.L Have Suspended Richard Silverwood : Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:57 pm
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/fe ... gby-league

4th Paragraph down

The Rugby Football League, meanwhile, has suspended Richard Silverwood, one of the six full-time referees employed by the governing body, because of an alleged breach of his colleagues' confidentiality.

Silverwood was conspicuous by his absence from the season's first full round of Super League fixtures at the weekend and an RFL spokesman confirmed today that he has been suspended indefinitely for "an alleged breach of IT policy". This is understood to involve supplying the personal details of fellow referees to a trade union without first receiving their permission. He declined to comment today.

It leaves Stuart Cummings, the RFL's controller of referees, with another headache shortly after the shock departure of the British game's leading official, Ashley Klein, for Australia.

Silverwood, 32, became the youngest ever referee for a leading fixture when he made his Super League debut in 2001 and was named Referee of the Year in 2006. His suspension left Cummings with only five full-time referees to cover the seven Super League matches at the weekend – one of them Thierry Alibert, the Frenchman who has been appointed to replace Klein on the full-time panel.

Two part-time referees, Jamie Leahy and Gareth Hewer, were promoted to control the other games, with Leahy now expected to join the full-time panel because Hewer does not want to leave his job at Sellafield.

Hardly "match fixing" or something is it ?

A breach of data protection is not a hanging offence as far as referees go, so I would expect him to get rapped knuckles and then re-appear.

Actually if he breached the data protection rules its a serious employment matter that could end up at tribunal.

I know I wouldn't be happy out that a person from my HR had sent my personal details to another organisation without prior permission. The question has to be asked how he was able too though, I don't have access to the details of my fellow colleagues.

Really, I know of someone that was suspended and then sacked for gross misconduct for something along those lines.

Indeed, and the individual and company are often liable for huge fines. The level of data is of no concern, its still a breach of the data protection, he will be very lucky to keep his job.

a breach of Data protection at my last work place (loan company) only resulted in a disciplinary(first written warning) but usual just a telling off. And we help lots of information that could have been used to steal identities.

In which case i would challenge the strength of that companies adherance to legislation and would be very interested to see them justify their process to a regulatory authority!! (its actually frightening in this day and age to hear about a company operating as slack as that!)
