RIP Phil Lowe : Wed Mar 20, 2024 12:40 pm
Even though he wasn't one of our own I thought it would be fitting to pay tribute to him on this forum as he was Hull born and bread.

For those not old enough to remember he was quite simply one of the best players to come out of this city and one of the greatest second rowers to have played the game. He used to strike fear in me when he played against us!

Condolences to family and friends.

That is sad news.

Phil had a great RL career and was a very strong forward. I seem to remember him running in two tries in the infamous Good Friday Derby at The Boulevard in 1981, that gave Rovers victory.

Condolences to Phil’s family at this sad time.

I was there but I didn't see to much of the game as I was taking cover.

Beat me to it. It's funny the first try of his I remembered was at the end of that game to win them the spoils. He sliced through the centre channel like a runaway train to score in Ryan Corner at the SE end of the Best Stand. He was a great forward big strong and very mobile he ran us ragged a time or two. I remember when he and Mal Reilly went to Manly arounds 1974 time and were a massive hit over there playing around 70 games before he returned to star again for Rovers. I went to the Gym at the hotel on the Marina in the early 90's where he was a regular and he kept himself fit well into the twilight of his life. But he was always pleased to talk rugby, loved Rovers and was active with them behind the scenes for years.
These things are bigger than prejudice and rivalry. as the City loses another legend.

In the land of wishful thinking once more. Patiently waiting for our time to finally arrive.

I've been on the internet and have already got a sense of the fans' passion for the club. They are very fanatical - Peter Gentle 12th September 2011.

Money doesn't talk it swears, Obscenity who really cares, Propaganda all is phony.

I'm the son and heir of a shyness which is criminally vulgar.

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.

Like you say Wilf, he was part of a great generation of players who starred both here and down under. I can remember him returning to rovers from Manly in the mid-seventies and it being a real boost for them.

After his career had finished I used to see him around town on a Friday-Saturday nights (Iike a fair few people I guess!) when he had a stint as pub landlord, chiefly at King Billy on Lowgate. He was always ready to talk rugby with anyone who fancied a chat, whichever team they were supporting.

Always very sad when players of his stature and calibre pass away. A genuinely nice guy by all accounts.

This is very sad news, a great second row, with Rosy a dream partnership, he could run like a stag, and as others have said, he struck the fear of god into me every time he was down to play.

R.I.P. Phil Lowe, condolences to his family,

Remember him as landlord of Quayside , when I worked at Waterfront. He'd always come across for a pint and a chat , when it wasn't busy and was a very knowledgeable guy on all things RL. A great player, held in the highest esteem by the Australians and probably not rated highly enough by the RL world, especially for his try scoring record. A legend of Hull, particularly the East side, and rightly so. RIP Big Phil Lowe.
