Sounds brilliant A MULTI-MILLION pound sports facility featuring floodlit pitches, gym and a restaurant could replace the destroyed Widnes Recreation Club. The Weekly News exclusively revealed last January how Widnes Vikings had become front runners to take over the Liverpool Road site, after the Recreation Club was wound up due to crippling bills. The plans were brought forward following a devastating arson attack in May which left the derelict building gutted by flames, resulting in its demolition. And next Thursday council chiefs are due to approve in principle plans proposed by Vikings’ parent company Widnes Sport Ltd for a state-of-the-art £3.26m complex. It would serve as a training and development facility for the Vikings but would also be available for community use, as well as provide pitches for a range of local and international sporting events. The plans include: A full size artificial floodlit turf pitch. Two mini artificial floodlit turf pitches. Two mini turf pitches. Four international size turf pitches. 150 car parking spaces. The complex would also boast a ‘sports and community hub’ building which would include: Ten changing rooms. Physiotherapy space. Gym and fitness facility. A full size Sports Hall with ability to be sub-divided. Sportswear retail unit. Office space. Bar and restaurant with a capacity for 170 people with the ability to be sub-divided to offer community function room/conference space. A report to the council’s executive board said the building will also provide space for community groups such as Scouts and Guides. |
