Just wondered how other Widnes fans feel about Widnes and the game in general.
After over 40 years of watching Widnes and RL I am slowly losing enthusiasm for Widnes and RL. I have not enjoyed going to the game for the last few seasons, but feel I have to go through loyalty.
However I feel SOC has made some massive mistakes, particularly in the choice of Betts and Cullen. We should have gone into SL with a coach with the correct experience and whom could attract the right players. As of now we have a coach whom is well out of his depth, together we a squad of very ordinary players, many who are injury prone.
How does the club seriously expect to attract new fans along with the current set up.
I cannot believe that people were taken in by the recent display against Leeds. Agreed it was full of enthusiasm, but very little skill. Our tries were not created by crafty half back play or dummy runners, pure luck with a bounce of the ball. Our tackling was again at times woeful, Leeds running through holes in our defensive line in exactly the same place numerous times. and this was a Leeds team who were just coasting through 80 minutes.
I know I am not alone in my feelings for the club as I have spoken to other Widnes supporters whom feel exactly the same way and are seriously considering why the continue to go to matches.
I know people will come on here and shoot me down ( not in the same manner as the terrible TIW forum ) but as I say these are the feelings of a number of supporters.
Maybe some of these feelings have been caused by SOC's 'We're not going into SL to make up the numbers' line but
a) I genuinely think that there wasn't the appreciation at the time of the difficulties in recruiting top quality players
b) that we are only a few weeks into a 3 year long project
c) that SOC will act if he doesn't think that the coach cuts the mustard.
People asked for a response against Leeds and that is what we got. Surprise surprise it wasn't the finished article but it was better and hopefully we will improve as the weeks go by. Losing Watts is a massive blow and must be like Hudds losing Brough, Cas losing Chase, Salford losing Holdsworth...
We have the basis of a SL squad now and I think we will add to it and improve in years two and three.
Fans that walk away are never lost for ever!!! they will soon flock back when there are more victories and they'll be going on about how great a fan they are singing 'Widnes til I die.'
This isn't 1990... we aren't coming off the back of a WCC and League Championship win, we haven't been adding the games best players to an already established league and cup winning side. We have been out of the top flight for 6 years and it may take more than a few weeks for us to begin to look like we truly belong in SL again from a playing perspective.
