thanks guys, i downloaded Gimp2 after my previous post. if only i could work out how to merge different layers i could crack on with my first idea!

Right, i realise its not banner dimensions. but dalto suggested i have a go and i just felt like creating. i can worry about dimensions later. so after two evenings of playing around (i dont believe in manuals or tutorials), i have my first ever bit of image editing to show you.
ive stayed away from pictures of past glories and gone for the viking/norway and northern lights angle

Stella first effort Smurfster!!! I like it.

I'm not quite sure it's the finished article yet. I'll leave others to comment who are more artistically blessed but it's a great first effort mate.

Sorry for the necropost. We still need a new banner and according to the site admins it has to be 776px x 75px.

Also it can't contain any official logos and any images used have to be authorised.

It needs shrinking is more the point. It has to be 75 pixels high. That's 195 pixels high.

I get that but plenty of things can be shrunk once the design is agreed on

Oh absolutely. But the height restriction is a bit of a pain. It's difficult to do anything that interesting with so little space.
