I think you'll find that probably all Kevin Penny needs is a good team to play with and a coach with time to give. Wire were dire when he was playing there and he got dropped just as he was getting his confidence defensively.
What he will always be remembered for though in SL terms is the try he gifted us at Knowsley Road. He'd just scored a scorcher of a try against us - truly brilliant stuff - and then he gets bigheaded about it, which of course is an invitation to disaster. He defends on his own line, well, and then thinks it's a Wire player ahead of him and throws it to one of our lot and we score from it. From then on in some of the wisecracks in our fans began singing 'There is only one Kevin Penny' and he hasn't been seen at Knowsley Road since, bless him!
I think he's matured a bit now and is probably less likely to boast openly about his achievements. It was a tough lesson for him to learn I'm sure.
He is amazing to watch when in flight though. Just incredible. And I'm sure RL has done him a disservice somewhere down the line.
