I think he was trying to take the mickey out of Vinty Karalius (the then Widnes coach) who actually did jump off the bridge – all be it the railway bridge rather than the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

me and a mate did it back in one cider fuelled mad summer when the days were golden and lasted for ever.....aahhhhhh those were the days
into the ship canal mind, only a real nutcase jumps of it into the bloody river.

i had much less regard for my own safety in my teenage years. and we were all smashed and i couldnt be the only one not to do it. it still feels like your hitting ground from that height.

It's a popular misconception that Alex Murphy threatened to jump off the bridge if Widnes won the cup at Wembley in 1975 against his Warrington team.He actually made the statement in 1976 prior to the final against Saints,which we lost.
