I remember a story of Vince Karalius having done it and on asking my wife's grandmother it transpired that it used to be a fairly common thing to do.. But I was never sure which bridge it was that they were talking about. Whether there was someway to climb on the transporter somewhere and whether there was a lower point?

Either way... it seemed like madness to me.

the gantry type thing on the side of the railway bridge, which is now full of pipes, cables etc used to be a walkway. the stairs leading up to it are still there when you come off the bridge (going into widnes)

The Transporter went about 8 feet over the canal wall and the jumpers actually dropped off the transporter into the ship canal. They used to pay the penny to get on the transporter bridge and then climb over the side as it got near the wall and then drop in.

Daft, but they still did it!
