Pleasantly surprised : Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:23 pm
To be completely honest I was a bit down about the squad this year and wasn't expecting too much from them... possibly swayed a little by the taunts that we're there to simply make up the numbers until next year. Then I had another look at the squad and with Sculthorpe potentially signing I was quite surprised by the quality and potential that we have in there.
The halves look promising with a potential Thackray / L'Anson combination. Whilst we know what Thacks is capable of, L'Anson certainly looked like a decent foil for him in the few minutes we saw against Barrow. Then waiting in th wings we have some eager whipper snappers that have played alongside each other since they were glints in their respective fathers eye.
Hooker is the one potential area where I think there's some work to be done. If Netherton can find some consistency then problem solved. He's showed that he can be dangerous.
At loose last year I was impressed with Ben Kavannagh who looked a tidy player when asked to play there, but Finnegan's back and should add some potency to the attack and steel to the defence.
Then I had a grumble about the forwards, but the front row looks fairly decent now. Heckenberg, Haggerty, Pickersgil and now Sculthorpe.
Allen, little Haggy and Leualui in the back row all good players.
Then to cap it all off the strike players look fairly exciting too. Ropati, Tyrer, Flynn, Ford and not forgetting Craven joining in from FB.
A quick glance through the other players like Varkulis, Gaskell, Gerrard and Coyle looks like we have some more heads in there that can come in and do a good job for us. Then there's the kids that have been given the thumbs up and will be eager to show why they have been spoken about in such glowing terms.
If we can avoid the sort of injury crisis we suffered from last year then I'm feeling really positive about this year.
