Comparing Widnes to Wire about 5 years ago. : Sat Apr 21, 2012 11:11 am
Drinking Culture at the club, check!
Static line defence that conceeds around 12 meters per tackle, check!
Conceeding a lot of tries under the sticks, from a show and go by dummy half back or first reciever, check!
No structure or consistent system to the defence, check!
Poor fitness levells, meaning players recovery times undully long, check!
Poor fitness levells, meaning lots of tries are conceeded during the last 20 minutes of games, check!
Paul Cullen using made up words to make himself sound clever, he isn't, check!
Bizzare team selections that seem to reward his mates rather than performances, check!
Odd player recruitment, duplicating positions, and ignoring weaknesses, check!
A friendship with the club owner that made him almost unsackable, check!

Can anyone see where I am going with this?
Cullen is the problem!
Betts is his Jimmy Lowes, he just hands out the bibbs and cones.
When those buffons were removed from Warrington, and Tony Smith came in, the same players went from also rans to contenders immediately.
If this rubbish carries on into next season, other clubs and supporters will be questioning the logic of having such a sub standard team in the competition.
Also the crowds will dwindle to nothing, and Widnes might get the heave ho, which will finish them, on the attendance criteria.

I am not a Wire troll!
I grew up supporting Widnes home and away, but gave up on them when the world club winning side was broken up and given away.
I have always blamed the board and certain individuals for that, and Widnes have suffered ever since.
I have lived in Warrington for a long time, and started watching them about 8 years ago with my wife who is a long time Wire fan.
I work in Widnes, and can see the hurt that the fans are suffering, after the elation of getting into Super League.
I have watched Widnes 3 times this year, and I do not want to be a smart booty, but I saw this coming.

If someone knows Steve O'Connor, please email him this, and ask him if he disagrees with any of it?
Simon Moran sacked Cullen, and instructed his fixer to "Get Me Tony Smith at Any Price" in the back of a car on the way home from a drubbing!
Steve O'Connor needs to do the same immediately, and sack all of the coaching staff!
Any decent coach will not want the dross that is there, or will work under an idiot, who has the owners ear!

Drinking culture at the club? Unless we are talking Costa, I don't know where you are getting this from? I've seen little indication that the players aren't committed to the cause, albeit the way they give up during matches.

Drinking culture at the club?
I have it first hand from a ladf that was there that 2 Widnes players staggered into a tattoists in Ditton on a Saturday afternoon, bladdered!
The owner wouldnt do them because they were so drunk!
They wanted each others names tattoing on themselves!
Seeing the players out legless is nothing new, according to the lad who told me.

I've also read about this drinking culture at the club for the past 10 years.

Could it be, I know this sounds hard to believe, that RL players like a drink?

Cullen turned Warrington from near relegation Certainties into play off contenders, playing a brand of Rugby league that was fabulous to watch, if you seriously think Warrington Were Dire or a club in trouble under Cullen I guess you missed the end of Brian johnsons era, or John Dorahy, Daryll Van de Velde Steve Anderson, and David Plange's era's.

Cullen is not your problem he actually fixed other coaches problems...
he signed many of our current 1st team that have more than one challenge cup winners medals and a league leaders shield.

Cullen is only a problem if he chose Dennis Betts as that was a shocking decision...........Cullen can spot a decent player and has a decent coaching record and knows what he wants i.e the pitch dimensions at the HJ were his idea because he wanted us to play expansive rugby , and we have done ever since......., Dennis Betts couldnt spot a fat ar$e at a sumo wrestling contest, and thats where your problem lies.

I can live with Cullen on a caretaker appointment until the end of the season until something else can be sorted. Just anyone but Betts atm.

Whether deliberately or not, you've missed some pretty important points in your comparison.

The playing stats simply aren't comparable.
5 years ago Warrington's average points difference was -2 per game. Not good but absolutely nowhere near Widnes' current standing at -25 per game.
Wire finished 7th that year, with some much poorer teams below them in the table.
Widnes will almost certainly finish bottom by some distance this year.

Just on a side but didn't Lowes only leave last season (and went on to win the Grand Final).

I'm with Paddy too btw.
