21st March THINGS ARE GOING GREAT FOR THE DRAGONS
I have been asked to do a piece on how things are going and, in a nutshell, the answer is "great".
Our financial year runs from the beginning of November and we are well within my budgeted figures for income and expenditure. The last bank statement showed a balance of £55,000, and with 4 home games on the trot to come, that will probably increase to about £65,000.
Before anyone starts shouting for me to sign some more players, I must explain that I have been paying £12,000 each month into the club and sacrificing a large portion of my Resdev salary. I am happy to continue to let the bank balance increase and I will spend money if we really need to, but it is difficult to justify further spending on players after the results so far.
I am more or less resigned to the idea that the Dragons must spend the next 2-3 years developing, so that when we get into the new stadium, we can go straight to Super League if we win the Grand Final. If we win the Grand Final before we get the new stadium, I feel that it is very unlikely that we would be accepted into Super League.
That is not to say that we are not ambitious to win the Grand Final, in fact the income from winning combined with an increased income the following year will set us up so we can win again more easily.
I have discussed the scenario with Singe and he agrees we would be foolish to try and compete in Super League without him having a budget to sign a quality full time squad.
Success is not just measured in sporting achievement but in business and development. It is fair to say that we have achieved limited success on the field but off it, we have come on in leaps and bounds.
