Oh dear not good. Did Thunder come under the umbrella of the Union club Falcons? and I think it was a few years back that the Falcons were spending money like it was going out of fashion despite a winding up order from the Revenue. The fall out from the Covid era financially has been a mess.

Thank goodness Club Doncaster have a firm hand on the till.

Not sure how the eck they are going be able to fixture League 1 with just 8 teams.

League one: They'll have to play each other three times, either totally over the season, or after a mid season split and do away with the play offs (as the top half split would essentially be this).

Newcastle: It's a big blow for the sport, the RFL would have loved a city club like Newcastle in SL, hence it being a venue for Magic Weekends. My read of what has happened there is, the falcons owner took them over thinking, a bit of money and 3 years we'll be in SL. This proved harder than they thought and money has slowly drifted away leaving them in a mess

Newcastle swapped from full-time to part-time just before the start of the 2023 season. That probably de-railed them as they lost a lot of their better players and weren't able to regroup sufficiently to avoid relegation.

Yes, sad things didn't work out for them. I remember watching the Dons at the athletics stadium they used to play at.

A few alarm bells ought to be ringing with the loss of three clubs (West Wales, Skolars and Newcastle) in a relatively short period of time.

I can't see the Championship clubs wanting to change the league structure after having rejected a similar suggestion very recently - no doubt self-preservation was playing a part in that decision.

A 21 game season might work for League One with teams playing each other three times but should another team drop out, that really would really put the cat among the pigeons.

At the start of the 1962-63 season the RFL was split into two divisions, but before the start of the new season the teams were split up into two regional divisions 14 in the Western Division & 16 teams in the Eastern Division.Each team played eight games & the top four teams of each division competed in a playoff for the divisional championship,
HKR defeated Huddersfield 13-10 to win the Eastern Division Championship Final & Workington defeated Widnes 10-nil in a replay after the first game ended in a 9-9 draw & they became the Western Division champions.
The Dons only success in the Eastern Division was on August 25th 1962 at Tattersfield with the Dons defeating Leeds 7-6.
