The Eight Year Itch..... : Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:26 pm
Today 1st August marks eight years since i last missed an eagles first grade game of any kind. Now that things have changed in my life and theres plenty going on, theres a very good chance that record will end in the next twelve months, possibly even later this year. So im going to share with you my top five and worst five games ive attended in that time, just for old times sake.Worst 5:
5th - Waterhead (Away) 2004 - Challenge Cup
Ok we just won, but it was embarassing against a pub side, with half of a grand final and league winning team in there as well. Shocking.
4th - Workington (Home) 2006 - NL2
44-6 up on fifty minutes and lost 44-46. Horrifying collapse resembling the England cricket team of the 90's. I still dont know how we amanged to do it. Shameful.
3rd - Whitehaven (Away) 2008 - NL1
Sky moved it to Thursday, took the day of work to drive up and lost 56-4. After twenty minutes the players just gave up and didnt care. No regard whatsoever. Martyb's rant on this very forum after was legendary for a man ive never seen get angry in all the years ive known him. Insulting.
2nd - London Skolars (Home) 2008 - Northern Rail Cup
We conceded fifty points at home to a team that probably didnt score fifty again for the whole rest of the season. Worst home performance ever.
1st - Swinton Lions (Away) 2006 -Challenge Cup
Everything about this game and day went wrong, it peed it down heavily all night. They wouldnt let us in the stand to get cover as we were away fans, we played awful and lost, there was the most outrageous refereeing error ive ever seen and the clutch broke on my car on the way back. Just horrendous.
Now the top 5:
5th - Toulouse (Away) 2009 - NL1
Whole new experience to watching the eagles, great weather, awesome banter and what a finish to win the game. A great time considering the horrendous personal problems i was having at the time.
4th - Halifax (Away) 2009 - NL1
We were bottom, they were top. Matt Calland said they were the best team in the league by a country mile, and we denied them even a bonus point. The ultimate foot-in-mouth comment. Not to mention Bolu's hall of fame "tackle" on Worrincy. Incredible.
3rd - Workington (Away) 2006 - NL2
Went up for the weekend, spent saturday night in Whitehaven hospital, got no sleep so watched us dismantle them whilst looking like a zombie after no sleep. The game that made our season, i still watch it on DVD. Memories.
2nd - Doncaster (Fev/Away) 2009 - NL1
It doesnt get much better than thrashing your closest rivals in the baking sunshine. "Menzie wants five!, Menzie wants five!". Awesome.
1st - Swinton (Warrington) 2006 - Play-Off Final
The ultimate day out, everyone was there, a great game and performance and weve never looked back. The culmination of seven years hard work in 80 mins. A good job i booked the Monday off work, and the Tuesday. Epic.
Can anyone top those?
