Jennings signs for Roosters; SL misses out again! : Tue Jan 15, 2013 8:29 pm
One of the most talented and exciting attacking centres in the world today, Michael Jennings, has signed a 4 year contract with the Sydney Roosters. No Super League club was in contention for his signature. What a pity! 15 years ago a man of his talent could have been attracted to a contract with Wigan, St Helens, Bradford or Leeds. It shows just how far northern hemisphere rugby league has slipped in its financial competitiveness with the southern hemisphere NRL. The lesson is: the RFL has to consider its current market profile, and find out how to make the SL a better funded competition with higher levels of sponsorship and a higher salary cap.
That won't happen until the roster of clubs in SL looks more national and international. Do Nigel Wood and the current array of SL club bosses (other than Ian Lenagan) understand this?
