I agree but there's also nothing wrong with a player leaving early and the club getting a fee for them.

Correct
Just dont expect them to sign new ones and stay for a couple more years if we dont give them these flexible options.

Brian, i know your thoughts on this but we have to stop using this term "leaving early".
They're not, they're leaving exactly as their contract states.
If Bateman didn't have the clause inserted he wouldn't have signed a new contract and left 2years earlier than he did.
If George hadnt been given his deal with the 2yr NRL get out he wouldn't have signed it and he would have gone 2017 (and Wire were prepared to give him a 2 year deal on more than we could offer even with Marquee and give him a 2yr get out clause).

End of the day there seems to be 2 options.

Sign a player on a 2/3 yr deal say and be prepared to let him go end of that deal for nothing, not just potentially to the NRL but other SL Clubs and Rugby Union would be on the alert and theyd get them for nothing.
Or
Sign a player on a 4/5 yr deal with a get out clause after 2/3 if player receives an NRL offer he wants to take up.

Player still potentially leaves at same time except one we get something for and the other we leave ourselves open to bids/offers to the player from many varying sources

I know which one I'd choose.

Makes absolutely Zero difference if a player is home grown or not, and I sense this a lot with Wigan fans.

Oliver Gildart for example deserves the same money, contract status etc from Wigan as any other player.
Just because he came through our ranks doesn't mean he should do anything for us for less than he could get elsewhere. Hes paid back our investment in him 10fold already.
Our best hope is that if we treat younger players right, and give them a good environment to train, with good opportunities to play and develop they will stay with us given equal opportunities elsewhere.

But to expect them to be "Loyal" to us and we can offer them less etc and not treat them right (see our youth development circa 97 to 07 for how not to deal with youth players) is bad form for me.

I never said there was, Let's just try and get bigger transfer fees, Why should we do the Aussies any favours, They can easily afford to pay more yet IL won't hold out for it which suits the Aussies down to the ground

I understand the "want" to try and get bigger transfer fees
BUT
slapping half million transfer fees into the contract may not be to the player or his agents liking knowing that will be prohibitive to any potential move down the line, so theyll probably not sign it.
Pre-empting someone's "worth" 2 years down the line isnt easy and then when you bring into the equation that the player wants to leave,
I don't know what we got for Tomkins/Mossop/Bateman/William's but I do know it's more than what we would have got if they had just signed a standard 2/3 year deal and walked away for nothing.
What we did get will always be subjective to each person's own view of that players worth.
But I'd guess we got somehwere around700k from those sales?
I'm sure someone will tell us what we did get.

As I understand it the club and player agree the release fee and that's what is placed in the contract, if that fee is not met with the "purchasing club" then the player stays, unless you know different?

Spot on.

It doesn't matter how much we got - the fact is we got something.

I honestly can't believe there's a debate on this. I'd have thought it's pretty clear - it's a good policy. Either way the player is leaving and at least we're getting cash out of it!
