| Quote bramleyrhino="bramleyrhino"The regulation refers to what is "reasonable". There is no such thing as a "12 month warranty", "6 year rule" or "two year EU rule". What is reasonable is open to interpretation but SOGA suggests that the liability of a retailer / manufacturer could extend up to six years. You wouldn't expect a Fiat Panda to last as long as a Rolls Royce - and that is reflected in SOGA.'"
Pretty much all warranties, at least in part, stand or fall on interpretation of what is "reasonable". So, in the automotive trade it is quite normal to see the term "fair wear and tear" included in the terms and conditions of any guarantee, with the dealer (or civil courts) adjudicating on what constitutes as "fair".
I agree that it would be wrong to equate SOGA with a manufacturer's warranty. But this [udoes not[/u invalidate the claim that there is a legislative framework (or "rule"icon_wink.gif which gives consumers the right to pursue remuneration years past the conclusion of standard warranty. Downplaying the chances of a successful claim is simply playing into the hands of manufacturers who have been screwing consumers royally for years. If anything we should be hyping them up!

I always go to these guys www.pennineplus.com/
I usually find independent businesses that have been around for years and are recommended by the locals are a better bet. You get service from people who know their stuff and who seem to genuinely care about the job and the customer. You can also get things like same day delivery, set up and taking your old stuff away for next to nowt.
Wouldn't touch the likes of Currys with a bargepole.

| Been shopping for a built-in oven today (yes, I know, I like to spoil her at christmas), we tried, just for old times sake, a local branch of Comet that closes on Monday and has a give-away sale of the last of their stock - nothing took our fancy but they were literally giving some of the stuff away, for a few quid.
Currys was next door so we tried there - now this is one place that I expected to be booming with their neighbour going bust but the range of built-in cookers that they had was limited to four or five and all of those were being sold as cooker and hob separates as a boxed set "deal", you couldn't buy yhtem individually, the wife even suggested that we take a package deal and have a gas hob as "a spare" - who the fook keeps a spare hob unit just in case ?
We ended up at a local electrical good retailer, literally a one-shop individual trader and it was a pleasure doing business with him/her (husband and wife team), the cooker that we bought was not any more expensive than the major retailers give or take ten quid or so, and he was happy to barter, more importantly he had the one in the shop that we wanted and could deliver personally on Weds, I asked him how much the display model was, knocked £50 quid off and we both ragged it out of the wall and carried it to my car - like doing business in the old days
He'll get my business in future.

| By the way - in the last two months I've replaced our dvd player, bought a new washing machine, bought a new central heating boiler (just this week) and now the cooker.
She'd better not ask for any more christmas presents in two weeks time.

| Curry's - we bought a washing machine on Saturday for delivery and installation (which we paid extra for) on Sunday. They turned uo as planned Sunday morning. So far so good. There was a problem in getting the old machine out. I got it out by Sunday lunchtime so I 'phoned them to see if they could come back later. They said they'd come Monday, which was fair enough. So, Mrs Dally took the day off (she currently working, but only paid when she turnes up). they came, had a bash and gave up as this job apparently needed their "integrated kitchen team." I 'phoned up monday night to confirm they had been booked to come on Tuesday. They had. I also made it clear they need to send someone from their "integrated...". They assured me they'd told the depot and even put me on hold whilst allegedly telling them. Tuesday, they come again and say we need their integrated kitchen team. Mrs Dally has now taken two days off. She said they were supposed to be said team. Then she's told we may need to pay more for them to come! This despite no questions being asked when paying for the installation. They said they'd book it. I 'phoned to check Tuesday night that we'd been booked in for Wednesday. Yes we had they said. So Mrs Dally took a third day off. They did not come at all! So she 'phoned up a third party who came early in the morning so she could go to work. So we paid £537 for the machine, delivery and installation. Curry's have breached the contract and in the process it will have cost us another £500 due to their incomptence and complete disregard for customer service. Also they left our dishwasher half out during their useless fumblings.
Never, ever use these clowns. Like so many big company's these days they make it impossible to contact them. I did manage to find a number for head office via the investors section of their website. But even that went to a secretary's answer-machine! Luckily head office is only a short drive away and so if they wind me up any further I'll be round there!

There appears to be a constant recurring theme here?

She will need a new bag, to put all the receipts in.
A site manager I know was pondering on what to buy his wife this year as last year he bought her a bread maker and the ungrateful cow (his words) moaned like hell. I suggested an halogen oven as they save lots of time so she can get some more hoovering done. I left not knowing if his look was one of 'you can pi$$ off' or 'that's a good idea'

I think the fact the SOGA states the liability of a retailer could extend up to six years is good enough reason to to adopt the term "six year rule". Anyone who reads the SOGA with respect to this will understand that what is reasonable is open to interpretation and it doesn't mean you are guaranteed redress as a matter of routine. What is does guarantee is that if it [iis[/i reasonable to expect your item not to have suffered the problem you can get redress for up to 6 years.
You example is rubbish anyway. How long a Rolls lasts is irrelevant. What would be relevant would be if it was reasonable to expect the Fiat not to have suffered whatever failure occurred outside of a three year warranty (for example) in years 4,5 and 6.
