Sent off as in Red cards?
Bleeding hell what a farce, the only thing i'd like to change about scrums is the deliberate feeding between the prop and back-row.
Get into the channel and if you lose the strike tough i seem to remember Maskell been pretty good at this but i could be wrong.
'"
I think it's alright now that you feed in the middle, and allowing to feed behind the props front leg, which I'd formally allow in the rules.
Remember, the scrum is awarded against a team because they did something wrong. Therefore you don't want to give them too much chance to win the ball back at the re-start.

| Quote tvoc="tvoc"I assume the people who think reintroducing contested scrums into rugby league were not around in the good old days of David Ward and Keith Bridges being sent off together (not for fighting - which would have been acceptable) but for persistent scrum infringements at Post Office Road one foggy day. Gerry Kershaw the Steve Ganson of his generation.
Rugby league scrums do not have enough players in them to make them stable, should we bring back the wing forwards too while we are at it and do the job right.'"
I don't want to go there either. Especially as during the early days when I watched Leeds we would regularly lose the scrum count 25-5 (there was one particularly one sided game at HQ against Saints that sticks in the memory). Also, Kevin Dick was so unused to actually getting the ball out of the scrum that all he could muster was a flop on the ball. I don't ever recall him passing it from the scrum base in his later Leeds career.

| Contested scrums were a blight on the game and rightly consigned to history. Loose arm, foot up, pushing before the ball went in, home feet and the familiar sight (as still in union) of scrum after scrum having to be re-set before the referee finally gave up trying for an acceptable restart and arbitrarily awarded a penalty.
At one time in the seventies the 'put in' would go to the defending team (regardless of whose offence had caused the scrum) and the loose head went to the attacking team, they were a barrel of laughs to watch.

We did, occasionally, with Lee Jackson just about being of a generation of hookers used to striking for the ball.
While I agree that RL Scrums are, and should be, just a mechanism for restarting play, given that they are so rarely contested you would have thought a surprise full bind and push against the feed could be a very effective tactic once in a while.

This was an occassional tactic used in Tony Smith's first few games. I think at least one scrum was won against the feed.

Leeds have certainly scored tries in the SL Era directly from winning scrums against the head and feed. I just wish I could remember a specific example.
Phil Clarke has his say: www.skysports.com/opinion/story/ ... 98,00.html and as a bonus there's a picture of G1 in his playing days.

I'm glad they cropped that picture where they did. Judging from the positions and expressions, I don't want to be seeing what's going on below the midriff.
