| I see no-one has yet mentioned the Hotel de la Loge, probably the most central of all the central hotels, probably the strangest hotel you will ever stay in for the whole of your life, one of those places that you will book again to return next year because you didn't believe it the first time around, probably the most French of all the hotels on offer in Perpignan and certainly not corporate-ized to within an inch of its life like most others can be - "multi storey car parks with room dividers" as one well known poster from here described some of the chain hotels.

I saw that one, but you dont get to soak up the atmosphere the day before, also you'll be nackered at the game as I should imagine it will be a 4am start from home.

had a look on our first visit to Perpignan but found it totally unsuitable for us due to the lack of Handicapped facilities (my missus is handicapped) - but it looks great and within easy staggering distance of Le Castillet & the rest of the splendours of the city

Aye, must admit it is temping flying direct to Perpignan and from a closer and better airport. Its just that the days are naff, after game day I won't have much interest in hanging around Perpignan.

Indeed. The last time we stayed in Perpignan for the game weekend, we ended up hiring a car on the Sunday and driving down into Spain just for something to do.

No. Last season when I went with wigan, our game was on a sunday. And most of the pubs and cafes along the canal were closed, only a few pubs ( where you pay around8 euros a pint) were open.

Yes but you're dealing with religion here.

Not really, the main reason is religion - for a secular government they are very devout catholics, you'll find saints day celebrations all over France in just the same way that you do Spain etc

| On match days, all along the canal is normally packed with fans having a drink and "lively banter", but last season it was pretty much empty, as many went elsewhere as there was no where for them to buy and drink from without paying a fortune.

| yeh, sunday Is a dead day in most parts of france but enough bars & restaurants are open in Perpignan to keep you/us going - all the shops will be closed however except for a few supermarkets/minimarkets which may open the sunday morning - it's all to do with the unions wanting to protect their members from exploitation from the bosses etc the religion excuse is just guff.
If the match is at the Brutus then the local rugby bar on the corner will be open matchday,if it's at the Giral then it will probably be closed

| When we went 2 years ago, on the Sunday we went to Banyuls-sur-mer.
Visited a vineyard to sample the wine, which was very good - they have been making it since Roman days - but pretty pricey.
Bizarrely, when we went o7ut for the day on Tuesday I noticed that Settle is twinned with Banyuls, hard to see what they have in common except maybe size.
O/T the Ribblehead viaduct looked splendid against the snowcapped tops of the hills.

They sell expensive wine in Settle too, I bought some once.
Nearly £3 a bottle it was.

If you have the time & the especially the transport, there is an interesting Museum of Modern Art (Musée d'Art Moderne) at Ceret not too far from Perpignan - it's right in the town square amid the hustle & bustle of the town - it's particularly lively on market days

nice place and well worth a visit
