| Quote SaintsFan="SaintsFan"Backwards from what point exactly? Losing the fourth Grand Final on the trot you mean? Just sneaking into second in the last game of the season?
Oh, that just sounds like the comments people were making about our attack last season!
We shipped an average of 20 points a match last season. What's our average for the five games of this season?
And it was last brilliant when, exactly? When Pryce and Eastmond were fit maybe?
We had it in spades at Cardiff and, according to those who went there, in Perpignan too. We even tried a fightback against Warrington, once we'd remembered how to play a game without Cunningham on the pitch.'"
Another couple of mins in Catalan and they would of won

And had Andrew Dixon's effort been awarded, [iwe[/i would have won.
Had Foster converted that final try against Wigan, we would have won.
Had the Warrington game been five minutes longer, we would have won.
Had the moon been pink and the rain fallen upwards, we would all have died.
Would haves don't count; final results do.

Plus the fight back against Warrington was more a case of them taking there foot of the gas as tony smith said after the game.
It's just a utter shocking start to a season and I honestly fear what the likes of Wigan, Warrington and giants will do to us at their grounds.
Even with the injury situation at Leeds, I can't see anything other than a heavy defeat.

| Quote St pete="St pete"In that case, if we dont make the grand final we have taken step backwards.
If we don't make the top 8 we will have taken step backwards.
If we let more points in than last year, then we've taken steps backward.
If we don't finish leading points scorers then we've taken steps backward.
IMO all of the above will mean we will have taken massive steps backward come the end of the year, I'd love to be wrong but on current form I can't see anything other than a poor season.'"
So those are your measures? Ok. In that case, we took steps backwards under Potter. We didn't get to two CC finals. We shipped more points under Potter than under Anderson. Significantly more in the 2010 season actually. We only just made it to the second spot in 2010; we'd been fighting over the first spot for six years previously.

| Does anyone know or see any reason of having a winger on the bench?
I know Royce said he'll be having a outside back on the bench but did he explain why?
I just don't see the point in having foster on the bench. Last year foster had taken gardners spot on the wing and was playing very well but has now been dropped to the bench.

Yeah, of course it was! And Tony Smith would say that, wouldn't he? We simply came back at them. Had we done that earlier, we could have nicked it just as we have nicked it from them many times before. However, I'm glad they won. We don't have that silly pressure thing going anymore now. They are just another superleague fixture. But it was fun while it lasted!

He hasn't chosen a winger on the bench. He has chosen an outside back on the bench and he explained why: it is to cover for injuries and avoid wholesale changes in personnel mid match. It has been a wise move, too. Without Foster on the bench, we would have had to have made changes against Wigan and against the Quins. As it was, because Foster was on the bench, he just slipped in and provided cover.

That wasn't what has been reported. We were offside apparently.
Well, your coach had their opinions. I have read differently. I didn't go so I don't know but when I watched the tries I saw well structured tries scored and that is what I was hoping to see.
And it is perfectly possible that in fact we are now just an ordinary side. Ever thought of that?

You was the one who stated we went backwards under potter, I'm just stating IMO we are on course to make massive steps backwards based on our start under Royce.
The would be nobody as happy as me if he turns out to be a great coach and gets us winning things but at the moment we look terrible.
Like I said on another post, three players have told me that they don't feel confident under Royce and his methods are dated.

But Wello is one team member likely to break down. He is playing on injections. Wheeler doesn't play fullback. Lomax probably could and in fact I would agree that Lomax would make better cover. However, he has been needed at centre to cover for Wheeler who was injured. We are thin on cover this season.

Indeed. And he did wonderful things with Saints (as well as some pretty awful things!). Wello's favourite coach was Daniel Anderson. So there.

No, he hasn't. But he hasn't had a great set of circumstances to start with either. I would love to have seen what he could have done with Leon and Kyle at halfback, all our props in place, our backline fit and Wello not playing on injections.

Not many teams pick wingers ( outside backs ) anymore if any do. The game has now produced multi skilled players that just slip into many postions.
We have Scott Moore on the bench that can cover the halfback spits, roby can also fill in there as Jon wilkin can.
In our forwards we also have Sia and flannery that can fill the centre spots.
I agree with saint Simon, it's a complete waste of a spot on the bench.

Except that Simmons also stated that he wanted to slot players in to cover rather than swapping and changing players around, as per Potter. Jon Wilkin, for one, has come out in favour of that approach as he has been quoted as saying he is enjoying his rugby now that he plays in one position. Scott Moore also said that, stating that he didn't know where he was last season with all the changes he had to cope with. He played at centre once and he said he had never done so before and must be the slowest player in the team so never was that more unlikely a position for him to play.
We had too much instability under Potter. It was possibly a request of the players that they stick to their own spots wherever possible. I think that is fair enough. And like I said, Foster was used because he can cover wing and fullback. Meli shifted into centre, where he has played many times before, when Foster was needed to cover Lomax on Friday.

| I'm not saying start with these players out of position but if need be they can slot in, that way we can have an extra forward on the bench.
I think it was 80s in the day of only having 2 subs that teams had a outside back on the bench.

| I'd liked us to have brought a smart coach in, a coach that thinks about the game and get the message across to the players about what he wants from them.
I think it's pretty obvious from looking at Royce that even as a player he wasn't into the sweet science of the sport as he looks like a old style boxer.
