I don’t know how we’d structure this but this is an idea I have in my mind.



The super league weekly rounds come to a standstill midseason to make way for the play offs system. The bottom six get a mid season break whilst the top eight battle it out in the play offs like we do. Once the plays offs have finished its back to the weekly rounds and a race to the top spot.



I think this will make the play offs better as it’ll be played in sunshine and the top spot respectable once again.

I'm not sure I don't like the top 8 format anyway, if it were me I would have the top 3, 1st straight into the final 2nd and 3rd to play off.

Perhaps you could have another competion playoff for 4th to 8th places.



Its getting farcical now league games are becoming just friendlies now with a mad rush to jockey for positions at the end.

There's no such thing as the play-off champions.



They decide the league champions. Who were SL champions last year? Who got the play the NRL champions in the World Club Challenge? Right. The winners of the Grand Final. That fact that some of our denser posters have problems with the tradional way of deciding the champions is their problem, not one for the rest of us.







But yes – we should definitely hold the play-offs before we know who's qualified for them.



In fact why stop there? Let's have the Cup Final in May , then hold the quarter finals and semi finals afterwards

This is a genuine suggestion that has not been thought through. Just think whilst the play offs will take a lot out of the top eight. The bottom six will come back as fresh as ever and get a chance to finish in the top half of the table - maybe even first!

Play Offs have decided the league champions for the vast majority of the 114 years of Rugby League so its not a new(ish) concept. You cannot beat the drama of a play off battle. Ok the best regular season side may not always win the Grand Final but it takes extra skills to succeed in the play offs. Mental strength as well as pshyical power. No way would I advocate getting rid of them - although it'll be interesting to see how this years top 8 system goes.

Thus qualifying for the play-offs and the chance to win the competition! Except that's already taken place half way through the comp, three months earlier. Does Damo have a time machine?

Midseason you can become the play off champions. At the end of the season you can become the league champions!

I dopn't think there is anything wrong with the play-off system for this season. I'm pessimistic about the 'choose your opponent' idea that one club will end up having but I'm willing to give it 2 or 3 season before I judge it properly

Right – so what you mean is not "let's have the play-offs in midseason" but "let's abolish them play offs".



And replace them with a new, separate and meaningless competition for the teams who happen to be in the top eight at that point, which no-one will be interested in.



Once more: The play-offs determine who are the league champions.

It would not be meaningless as the play offs are renowned for they brilliant games. The challenge cup has been messed about and that hasn’t lost any of its magic. You still get to win a nice trophy at the end of this mid season play offs.

how do you qualify for the play-offs? surely in the current system, the 2 stages of the competition work as 1 - in yours we would have 2 completely seperate competitions.

they are renowned for being brilliant games because there is a years work riding on them. it would become meaningless friendlies because clubs would rest players to keep them fit for the end of season run in.
