| Luke Gale.
Biased I know, but has stepped up to the SL plate admirably.

| Watching the Saints Wigan last week, the youngsters Eastomd and Tomkins impressed me awfully. They do seem to have a much more complete "skill set" for half back than say Sean Long or Rob Burrow had when they that age.

| From what i have seen Myler and Tomkins look the best bets for me as they have the Skill to be creative. being good without the skill is not enough. that is why Danny Mc Guire is NOT international class.
He looks good in a good team but is not creative enough. It is those creative players with the x factor that we need and that is why i like watching Myler and Tomkins. They think and they do something different . I just hope that they are encouraged to develop that side of their game and do not have it coached out of them to fit in with some system.
that is why i think the best thing that could happent to Tomkins would be lf he was to leave wigan and get away from Noble before he is replaced by some overrated aussie or crumbles under the pressure of trying to be wigans saviour.

I'd add Jonny Lomax to that list too, he is just returning from a knee reconstruction but before that he looked an outstanding prospect.
I think he is a tougher and stronger defender than those already mentioned.

| Myler looks to be the best of the lot. He's got a far better all round game than the rest of the crop. I'm still not convinced Eastmond's future is in the HBs.

| Hard to do a fair comparison on these players.
Myler looked anything but a future international at times last season, playing behind a lightweight Widnes pack and you feel he'll need to move to a bigger club to get a chance of international selection. He wouldn't be the first (or the second come to that) Myler from Widnes to play at halfback for GB.
McNally looks like a great player, but there's a lot less speed in the defensive line in NL1 and more time to think with ball in hand.
Eastmond & Tomkins look the pick of the bunch to me - out there doing it at the top level.

| Wheeler might well be every bit as good as Eastmond. Perhaps better, even.

Last season Myler was at Salford not Widnes, for who he has played 2 or 3 first team games.
And IIRC he won NL1 young player of the year as well as representing England in the World Cup warm up.

he was at salford last year and played very well...if your talking about the year before, he was 16! he's not 19 for a month yet.

| Matty Smith never seems to get a mention in these threads. I know he's 22 now but I think he may have something to offer in a few years. Quality kicking game and he isn't just a ball runner like a lot of other half backs.

Problem is - he is out injured and will be for the next three or four weeks. Shame really as he was playing well. Celtic could do with him back on the field ASAP.

| Gary Colemon looked good at getting into the right position at the right time for Saints yesterday. Wished he had been on the pitch more so I could have seen more of him

I'm not convinced yet.
Don't get me wrong, Wheeler is a good, tidy footballer and has a good step on him, but Eastmond frightens teams with his pace, footwork and raw ability. He's showing more and more of his kicking game, his passing game and organisational skills, which suggests he has all the hallmarks of becoming a quality number 7.
