it pains me to leave out mal meninga and dean bell, my old wigan team mate, but eddie tips it for me.
he was a brilliant centre. when i started out for widnes he really looked after me and, for what he did for me early in my career, i have to include him in my side.'"
No room for sentiment when picked an all time greats side.

| Quote dally messenger="dally messenger"dont normally have english players doing this in Rugby league week so i though people might be interested.
fullback - steve hampson
wingers - joe lydon & martin offiah
centres - gene miles and eddie cuunningham
5/8th - shaun edwards
halfback - peter sterling
props - andy platt and kelvin skerrett
hooker - martin dermott
2nd rowers - mick adams and les davidson
lock - ellery hanley.'"
For me neither of the props are in the same world as "Brick with eyes", Darren Britt or Webke

| I don't see any problem with his team. If everybody picked the best players they'd ever seen, then they'd all have the same names cropping up every week and the feature would soon get very boring.
Rugby League Week have been running this feature for years. It's interesting because of the different names that keep appearing.

| his comments on martin dermott :
martin was so instrumental in a lot of the success we had at wigan. he passed the ball from the ground so crisply, which is what every half back wants.
he was a bit of an unsung hero in our wigan team because we had so many star players but he always contributed

| Dermott was the best passer of a ball I've ever seen from acting halfback. So much of Wigans dominance came from his fast, accurate distribution. If yoou get a chance read John Monies book "the Ice Man" and his views of Derms.
On the prop forward he's chosen, I don't think James Graham would have been quite so keen to get at Skerrett or Platt.

Sure - most underrated Aussie in SL - ask Saints fans what they thought of Britt - one of the best ball handling props to emerge in the last 20 years - but then would not expect you to comment - you seem more a Mark Carroll man - one of the softest props ever to come here - he got beat up almost every week and went back to Aus with his tail between his legs - didn't even see the season out.

| Quote GSF="GSF"Cunningham was a great centre but no way was he better than Meninga.Andy is obviously picking the side with his heart with a slant towards former team mates.Sorensen,Boyd,Ward and Tamati were head and shoulders above Skerrett as props during that era and he played alongside two of those.'"
I'm pretty sure that Boyd had retired by the time Skerrett came on the scene and Tamati was over the hill by then too.
Skerrett won more medals than either Sorensen or Ward and lost nothing ion comparison with them at the time as I remember, they were all good props and all played in the ARL.

What I meant was that Gregory played alongside all of those props at one time or another apart from Sorensen whom he played against numerous times.Same era.(ish)

| Platt and Skerrett wiped their s with every front row in England (and a few Aussies) for quite a few years. Gregory has every right to include them.
Dermott was a sensational passer of the ball. As Rogues has said, the best passer from acting half back I've ever seen. His knack of making a half break from nothing and sending someone (normally Edwards) clean away was fantastic. He could also mix it and for his size put in quite a few damaging shots at crucial moments. You might think someone else is better, and that's fair enough, but to call him average displays total ignorance of the hooking role and Derm's abilities.
Am I correct in thinking this is 'Andy Gregory's Dream Team', and not 'Andy Gregory's Best Players of All Time Team'.
There is a difference and I can't help thinking he is in a pretty good position to judge.

Britt was good for us, but IMO, not in the same league as Fairleigh. Fairleigh was a class act, one of the best players of the Super League era, IMO.

Exactly. When Ellery did his in Rugby League Week, he picked Phil Larder as the coach. There has to be a personal element in these things or it would run its course very quickly.

| Steve Hampson was a great full back but the best one I ever saw was Greg Brentnall. He toured with the 82 kangaroos and was a bit of an unsung hero.I went to a few club games on that tour and saw all the tests on TV and he never put a foot wrong.Always in the right place at the right time, safe under the high ball, solid in defence, the bloke oozed class.Cool as a cucumber,he seemed to have lots of time with the ball and without it.Great full back.

Of course there is - it's not an 'all time greats side' after all, it's his 'dream team'.
His personal experience is what counts - as far as he's concerned he'd sooner have Eddie Cunningham alongside him. That's fair enough.
