| Quote CumberlandsAshes="CumberlandsAshes"He answered that question about TV rights very poorly. When asked what will make the competition worth more in 2012 than it is now he answered: "We'll have a great club competition which we've already got."
He than also suggested the season would be shorter...
So, the networks will be falling over each other to pay [imore [/ifor fewer games of a competition that will not have expanded further since the last time they bought them?
We've already been told by Foxtel and others that we need greater geographical coverage yet it is ignored. Gallop's reason for not expanding "two more teams may lead to two teams dropping off"... Why? Not if they're in completely new and different markets they won't affect the others.
Luckily he's not the one who will making the decision anyway and he won't be in the job then - surely not.
'"
i think he didnt want to admit hed signed such a poor deal last time after seeing what AFL got.
at least he pretty much admitted well be exapnding again once our TV rights go up.
more queensland teams in the nrl is fantastic.
as long as we safeguard queensland our position of dominance is safe.
shortening the season is something players want but im not sure about.
if players want a break, id stop the nrl for 3 weeks mid season with origin played on consecutive weekends in the gap which means origin doesnt overlap with the nrl and that the rest of the nrl gets a break

hell, id even like to see a PNG team before adelaide. a PNG franchise would be much more successful than adelaide will ever be. thats one market we can ignore without too much trouble down the track

Agree about Perth, NZ, and Gosford (though [ionly [/ias a relocation of a Sydney side)... Not sure there's really the population centres for another two Queensland teams. Another in Brisbane, yes.
Quote dally messengerhell, id even like to see a PNG team before adelaide. a PNG franchise would be much more successful than adelaide will ever be.'"
The fact is if the Sharks announced tomorrow they were moving to Adelaide it would increase the value of our TV rights. It would address Foxtel's concerns that we are not exploring potential new markets.
Announcing a team in PNG would add very little... there's very little media rights value in the place. Sad, but true.
The fact is the Rams were doing OK when News pulled the plug. They certainly deserved a bit more time to prove their worth.

| 1. i wanna see the bears back at the central coast. i dont think theres a need for any sydney clubs to move. times are tight but if they get through to the next tv deal theyll be fine.
bringing norths back would be like bringing souths back.
2. adelaide wont have juniors, and i doubt the number of viewers on tv would be that large. perth will have juniors and probably better tv numbers.
PNG would be more for player development and to get the international thing up to speed. plus if we want a strong international game, PNG would do more than adelaide. all we need for a great world cup is 6 - 10 good teams.
weve got aus and nz covered, we need to get PNG, Fiji, Tonga and samoa up to speed. SL will ensure france, england and wales are up there too. that would give us a basis for a very strong WC.
the way the population of queensland is booming 2 teams over 10 years should be fairly easy to get too.

Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia and is at the heart of the fastest growing region in the country. No offence to Featherstone but how is it comparable to Brisbane?
Besides, it's more interesting what Gallop didn't say. Obviously we won't be expanding the comp with just one team (A 17 team comp? Unlikely).
IMO he and the NRL are obviously planning on a second team to come in at the same time, which you can bet your house that it'll be the WA Reds. (A heartland team and an expansion team just like the recent SL expansion) Gallop plays his cards very close to his chest, remember how he treated the Gold Coast consortium when they had an overwhelming support to join the comp.

you live in australia and dont have much clue.
queensland will in a couple of decades become the 2nd most populated state in australia behind nsw.
with RL dominant in those no other sport will match RL, not even your beloved AFL.
queensland is a RL heartland, and we dont have enough clubs to service them.
more nrl teams in brisbane will also have the advantage of making it tougher for AFL, and could well send the brisbane lions broke.
queensland will be where the AFL as a so called national code fails very badly.

To be fair most people class the Gold Coast Giants/Seagulls/Chargers as one team because it was always the Gold Coast ARL team and all it ever did was change ownership a couple of times.
It's be like saying Souths/Manly/Auckland etc all are different teams because they are now privately owned.

how is RL behind AFL when its season has 40 million more viewers on TV than AFL every year.
we are far and away the bigger sport when you look at all fans combined.
being in a state where AFL is dominant has addled your thoughts.
you need to spend some time in queensland & nsw where people dont give a s**t about AFL.
as these states represent the majority of australia, RL is in a very strong position.
another club on the central coast and another in queensland will be massive for the game

NRL has its TV viewers due to being popular in the two most regionally populous states. After that we are light years behind!
The AFL trounce us in:
Media coverage
Individual club revenues
Individual Club profits
Bums on seats
Club sponsorship $'s
Code sponsorship $'s
Members
Expansion into non heartlands
Future plans for expansion
FFS in my city that is half the size of Brisane the two AFL teams are bigger than the Broncos, who have the advantage of a whole city to themselves. When the Broncos are selling out every game then it is clearly time for another Brisbane team.
If we had teams in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne that were as popular and well supported as the Swans and Lions you might have a point.
I take no joy in seeing the NRL be so insular and losing ground year on year but not living in Sydney gives a clearer picture of what is happening on the National stage and at the moment the NRL is being left way behind.

| yes when you include both crowds and TV ratings RL does come out well in front of AFL.
you've even mentioned the reason, its popular with a majority of the population.
as long as we maintain number 1 spot, im not fussed about the sports that trail in our wake.
the queensland RL clubs all get the highest crowds in the NRL. with the population of queensland booming, the state needs more teams, probably two.
another team in west brisbane circa 2012 will further enhance our hold on queensland.
with the population booming, we will take advantage of this.
it will also make life much more difficult for the brisbane lions as well, another positive.
anyway mate, rather than spending most of your time talking up AFL, why not try and get out to some NRL games, and actually watch more of the NRL yourself.
