| Quote BringBackRugbyLeagueBiff="BringBackRugbyLeagueBiff"I think your judgements have been clouded due to Thorman being your current scrum half.
Like Stan Butler said regarding Michael Dobson, the same applies with Sean Long but even more so; obviously a good wage packet - If it pays off, shrewd but still short term, backfires and you are stuck with a thorn (or should that be Sean) in your side.'"
Would rovers fans have been happy with signging Long if you did not have Dobson there?

| A bit of experience is what we need. It's only fair to give him a chance. If at this time next year he's either injured or playing badly then have a go at him.

You mean if James Webster had been replaced by Sean Long?
On a 1 year deal, considering it was last year, and when he was in better form maybe.
Had we announced the signing of Long now, I wouldn't call it as a forward step but a quick fix. I'd still someone such as Myler from Salford and therefore underwhelmed for the long term plans if we got Long instead.
Initially, it's a decent signing, but for long term aspirations, and in 2 years -another scrum half will be needed as he won't play at the very top level at 34/35.

Sorry pal but his kicking is crap and so is his organising.
Hull have signed 2 OAPs for next year.
It's big risk but IMO saints did rite in letting long go.
A change of club may do him some good. He still better than what you got at moment though.

I dont get this every team signs older players who will need replacing in a couple of years, you have done that with Fozzard, signing Long for two years gives us the chance to develop a young halfback or keep an eye out for another one.
Despite his age, Long is in the top 3 Scrum halfs in SL.
Saints wanted him to stay, but (rightly) only offered him a one year deal to keep Eastmond and others happy.

It gives us 2 years to get one though, people were even suggesting keeping Thorman for another year (before the Leeds game) and going all out for a quality SH for 2011. Myler is by far one of the most over rated players in SL and is not what we need for next season, he plays a similar role to when Horne plays stand off.
Now for the people knocking the signing of Long, who gives a flying one about his age, he still controls things for Saints, is their main kicker in general play and is a big mouthed cocky scrum half. Now call me naiave but isn't that exactly what EVERYONE on here as been crying out for? The other major plus point for me is that he will be here for all of the pre-season campaign, could the same be said for any Aussie we could have possibly signed?

| All this talk of Orford, Thurston etc. I think some of you guys are getting suckered by agent talk. It's VERY unusual for a genuine top-tier and prime Aussie scrum half to make the jump to the UK. In Australia these guys are feted like movie stars and live the life of such, whilst over here they are media nobodies.
Orford might say he loves SL more than having the Corrs girls lick ice cream off his nads - but the chances are he's just trying to secure himself a better deal in the NRL by initiating a Dutch auction.
For a team which has lacked a genuine scrum half (to crippling effect) for some time - a slightly past prime Long is infinitely better than an Aussie assurance that isn't worth the paper it's written on.
What happens if Hull hold out on an assurance from either Aussie and it falls through (very likely). Long has gone to another club and you're no better off than you are now. Indeed, you're worse off because you have less time to delve into the bag of second-tier scrum halves (see Thorman).
No brainer if you ask me.

Maybe we could have him straight away then seeing as you clearly don't need him.

Quote St pete="St pete"It's going to be intresting who saints play scrum half next year. IMO wheeler has proved he can hold his own but eastmond has not had the game time to prove it.
Not sure if wheeler and eastmond would make good halfback partner for pryce.
We need a ball playing 7 who can move us round the pitch and control the game.
It's shame long didn't do 1 more year.'"
