The fighting spirit was great, we battled back from a game that that was near enough gone.

Could've, Should've, Would've

This seems to be your problem at the moment. It is usually team spirit and sheer guts which changes Could'ves and Should'ves into Would'ves, which is maybe where you are lacking?
